male gaze

The Male Gaze, Mixed Media Installation, 2018

The Male Gaze was about the unwanted attention girls face in this day and age, especially in Bangladesh. The eyes in the show were taken from random guys on the street that were checking me or my friends out. Unbeknownst to them I was filming/documenting them. Most of the images were then screenshotted from these videos. The silhouettes in the middle were tracings of important women in my life and represented the fragile condition of our place in society. It’s not a hate attack on anyone. It’s just an effort to make men realize how much something so insignificant to them might have such a crippling effect to us. Day after day of disrespectfully getting stared at makes us want to shy away from something as simple as walking on the street.
